Joseph Rhinewine, PhD - Portland Mindfulness Therapy

Joseph Rhinewine, PhD

I collaborate with people who want to live life fully: with principle, passion and vigor. My therapy style is warm, supportive, genuine and direct. My primary treatment approach is called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps people to face and overcome difficulties in a more constructive way, moving forward to a full, rich and fulfilling life. ACT is a kind of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and has received considerable support in scientific studies examining its effectiveness across a range of problems. I have provided therapy for 18 years, have been licensed as a psychologist since 2005, and began to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in 2007.  I continue to focus my continuing education (see my ResearchGate profile) at becoming the best therapist I can possibly be.

I work with a broad range of people: those who have problems in their relationships or work/business lives, people who have anxiety or depression, or who are suffering from medical issues such as chronic pain, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and other conditions.

As director of Portland Mindfulness Therapy, in addition to providing psychotherapy, I mentor residents and students, and represent our clinic to other practice groups and to the media. I founded Portland Mindfulness Therapy in 2008 as a psychotherapy clinic and educational center committed to providing top-quality, mindfulness-based psychotherapy, classes and coaching to residents of the Portland, OR area.

I also provide life coaching to musicians and other creative people who are seeking balance in their lives.  I founded MusicaLife Coaching in 2013 to address the needs of fellow musicians and others who engage in a creative professional or hobby life.  I received my training in life coaching from the Institute for Life Coach Training.

On a personal note, I am married with two young children. I originally majored in Chinese Language and Literature (Oberlin College 1992) and still keep up my Mandarin. I also enjoy playing guitar, listening to and analyzing progressive rock, spending time outdoors, and am learning to design and cut gemstones.
